Thomas R. Verny, MD, D. Psych, DHI, FRCP

Thomas R. Verny, MD, D. Psych., DHL, FRCPC, is a psychiatrist, writer, lecturer and academic. He has previously taught at Harvard University, University of Toronto, York University and St. Mary's University, Minneapolis. Verny was founding editor of the Journal of Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health (JOPPPAH), president of the Pre and Perinatal Psychology Association of North America from 1983 to 1991 and served on the Association's Board of Directors until 2007. He is presently serving as Editor-in-Chief of JOPPPAH. Verny is the author of seven books and over 46 scientific papers. His book, The Secret Life of the Unborn Child (with John Kelly), became an international bestseller in 1982. His latest book, Tomorrow's Baby: The Art and Science of Parenting from Conception Through Infancy (with Pamela Weintraub, 2002), is also in paperback under a new title, Pre-Parenting: Nurturing Your Child from Conception (2003). He is the co-recipient of the 2009 Living Institute Cultural Innovator Award. In 2004 Mothering Magazine, in recognition of Verny's contributions to the field of parenting and child rearing, named him one of their "living treasures." In 2005 the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute bestowed on Verny a Doctorate of Humane Letters (DHL). Dr. Verny currently practices psychiatry in Stratford, ON, Canada. In his spare time he plays chess and writes short stories and poetry.
